EDC Vegas ProTip #72 Think About Travel Insurance

Here’s a protip that a lot of people probably never think about but it could be a worthy investment. I priced out a plan through a random company and it was only going to be $109 to cover my trip to Las Vegas for six days.

So, what is travel insurance? It helps cover a lot of things including having to cancelled trips, medical emergencies, lost bags, delayed bags, delayed flights and even 24/7 phone assistance.

There are some places that offer “cancel for any reason coverage” but the standard policy you’ll have to fall under a list of covered reasons.

Typical covered reasons for trip cancellation include:

  • Injury or illness of insured, travel companion, family member, or business partner
  • Hurricane or natural disaster strikes destination
  • Bankruptcy or financial default of travel company
  • Terrorism or mandatory evacuation at destination
  • Death or hospitalization of destination host
  • Home or business damaged, vandalized, or burglarized
  • Jury duty, a required court appearance, or military redeployment
  • Required to work, terminated, or transferred
  • Victim of felonious assault prior to trip
  • Traffic accident prior to trip
  • Theft of passport or visa prior to trip
  • School year extension
  • Legal separation or divorce
  • Loss of accommodations abroad due to an illness or death of host family or friends
  • and more

You will also be covered if while you’re away there’s an emergency back at home or something happens on the trip where you have to get back home. Some insurance  policies will also cover medical expenses while you’re on vacation. I’d suggest reading the fine print, something like alcohol poisoning may not be covered.

Most of us have insurance policies on our homes, cars, lives, apartments and even pets and never have to use it but if you ever do you’ll save yourself a lot of money. Look at those reasons above and think about how much money you’ve invested in the ticket, shuttle pass, flight and hotel. Unless you have more money than you know what to do with this is an expensive party trip and it can’t hurt to think about covering yourself.

There’s a lot of fine print so make sure to read the details and keep a copy of the policy with you in case anything happens you know what’s covered and don’t risk expecting to file a claim but have it denied later.

Where do you get travel insurance?  Google it, there’s a lot of places out there! Leave a comment if you have any experience with travel insurance, good and bad.
