EDC Vegas ProTip #13 Don’t Listen to Any More Recent Mixes

This one may sound a little odd but if you’re a picky music snob who’s often complaining about DJ’s playing the same sets over and over it’s time to stop listening to any recent mixes from your favorite DJ’s. We are so over saturated with music these days between Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Spotify and every other streaming radio station that we hear the same tracks over and over and once people see a DJ live they’re disappointed that it’s what they’ve heard already.

There will be many DJ’s who have the capability to wow the crowd and do something different but for the most part if you’ve recently seen a DJ at a festival or club gig they’ll probably play a very similar set at EDC. There’ll be some ID – ID’s tossed into sets but for the most part it’ll be the same. Listen to some mixes from last year or even older so you can be surprised at what you’re about to hear.

A majority of DJ’s are going to play similar sets that you may have heard already because they’re only given the standard one hour festival time slot. That barely gives them enough time to play just the record label tracks that they are trying to push. All of this stuff is a big business and the big name DJ’s play tracks for a reason, to make money through sales. They’re playing quality tracks but it’s all tied in to sales. These are the reasons why events like pool parties are a great environment to see them in. They’ll be playing in a different atmosphere and the good ones will change their sets up a bit.

Before the digital age when DJ’s had to travel with a record crate they would often play similar sets night after night back then as well just like they do today. It’s nothing new but we’re so saturated with music that it’s noticeable more than ever before. Some people love knowing more and more of the tracks being played so it’s not a big deal but there’s also others who love hearing something for the first time when you’re at a festival. If that’s you and you’re often disappointed it’s because you listen to too many downloads.

The mystery of the live set has disappeared with the internet and we can only blame ourselves for caving in and having to listen to everything.

The music is what makes the festival happen so go in knowing it or hoping to be surprised, it’s your choice!
