2001-11-10 State 01 Toronto with Orkidea and Armin van Buuren

At the tail end of 2001 there was a party held at The Docks in Toronto, Canada that featured a guy by the name of Armin van Buuren and he was billed third on the flyer. Armin was making a name for himself but at the time was nowhere near as popular as Tiesto at the time who was the king of trance. I remember at the time it was tough to find people to go to the event which is hard to believe now considering how massive Armin van Buuren is. This would’ve been around the time that A State of Trance episode 20 aired.

Orkidea had previously played at an event named Wintergalactic alongside Tiesto and made a huge impression on Toronto which is one of the reasons the production company behind this event brought him back. Orkidea may not be the massive name like Armin is but his productions and love of trance are just as huge. Orkidea played what’s typically considered the headline time slot and opened his set with a live violinist that just blew everyones minds away at the time.

The writeup for the flyer mentions “capacity limited for optimum comfort” because just like many clubs today, raves then would pack as many people in as they could and comfort and space would be a second thought. Sonic State delivered on providing an event with great production that gave it the feel of being somewhere else in the world.
